Your Starlink app can show a healthy satellite speed while a phone, tablet, or laptop still has one Wi-Fi bar or a much slower test. That is not a contradiction: your connection has two separate links, and either one can become the bottleneck.

7 checks before adding a router
1. Compare the two parts of the speed test
Use the Starlink app's advanced speed test when available. If the Mini-to-internet result is healthy but the device result is much lower, focus on Wi-Fi placement, band, interference, and distance. If both are low, first check obstructions, service status, and the power connection.
2. Retest after startup
Give the Mini time to finish starting and settling before making a final call. Reconnect the device, confirm it joined the expected network, and run the same test twice from the same place.
3. Test at three distances
Run one test close to the Mini, one around 20 feet away, and one where you normally work or stream. A sharp drop as you move away points toward the local Wi-Fi path rather than the satellite link.
4. Look at what sits between you and the Mini
Metal siding, vehicle bodies, foil insulation, appliances, masonry, and multiple walls can weaken Wi-Fi. The best open-sky location for the dish may be a poor radio location for people inside an RV, cabin, workshop, or house.
5. Count active traffic, not only connected devices
Thirteen connected devices do not automatically cause one Wi-Fi bar. Signal bars describe the radio link to that device. However, several devices actively streaming, downloading updates, backing up photos, or making video calls can divide the available capacity.
6. Pause one heavy activity at a time
Temporarily pause large downloads, cloud backups, game updates, and high-resolution streams, then repeat the test. This is more useful than disconnecting every idle smart device. If performance improves, the issue is shared traffic rather than basic coverage.
7. Decide whether a separate router solves the actual problem
A separate router can help when the Mini must remain outdoors for clear sky but your users need Wi-Fi farther inside. It will not fix a blocked satellite view, an unstable power source, or a service outage.

Stay with the Mini's Wi-Fi: close-range tests are good, normal-use areas have a stable signal, and only occasional heavy traffic slows things down.
Consider a wired router path: satellite speed is healthy near the Mini, but walls, a vehicle body, or distance make indoor coverage consistently weak.

Does having more devices reduce the Wi-Fi signal bars?
No. Device count can affect shared throughput when several devices are active, but signal bars mainly reflect the radio connection between that device and the Wi-Fi access point.
Why is the Starlink app speed faster than my phone?
The app can measure different portions of the path. A strong satellite link can coexist with a weaker local Wi-Fi link caused by distance, obstacles, interference, or the band used by the phone.
Does Starlink Mini support 5 GHz Wi-Fi?
Yes. Starlink's Mini specification sheet lists dual-band Wi-Fi 5. Actual range and speed depend on the device, environment, interference, and placement.
Should I pause connected devices?
Pause active downloads, backups, updates, or streams one at a time. Disconnecting idle devices usually tells you less than identifying the activity using the connection.
When does a third-party router help?

Does a standard Ethernet cable preserve the Mini's IP67 rating?
